RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Virginians voted on several amendments to the State Constitution on Tuesday.

Voters approved granting property tax breaks to the elderly. The amendment would give the local government greater discretion in granting property tax exemptions for people who are at least 65, and those who are permanently or totally disabled.

The second amendment would compel the General Assembly to exempt totally disabled military veterans from paying real-estate taxes on their primary homes. Voters have approved that as well.

The third amendment would determine how much cash the state could save for a rainy day. It was a tight race with 51% of the vote saying yes.

The General Assembly endorsed all three earlier this year, but voters had to approve the changes before lawmakers could take the next step and pass legislation to make them permanent.
