PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - In Petersburg the mayor has lost her seat. The 24 year council incumbent, Mayor Annie Mickens was not victorious this election day in the city council race for Ward 5 in Petersburg. She received the least amount of votes -- finishing in 3rd place. She was a write in candidate. Her name didn't appear on the ballot.

The projected winner is W. Howard Myers. He received nearly 400 votes. We spoke with him after the numbers came in - he said he's excited, happy, and ready to get to work. He also commended Mayor Annie Mickens and Jaqueln Bailey Kidd for running good races.

Myers campaigned on a neighbor-to-neighbor community partnership platform. A short time ago he spoke to NBC12 about what his plans are once he's sworn in.

"The first thing to do is to start attacking what the needs are in the cancer that has gone through the 5th ward - cleaning the city up, start creating vocation education, try to help everybody that's standing on the corner [and] give them opportunity to move themselves forward," said Myers.

Mayor Mickens says there are others ways to serve the community without being a city council representative and that she will do all she can to move the city forward.
