Richmond seniors get free weatherization kit

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Until supplies ran out, the City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities gave away free weatherization kits to Richmond City Seniors 65 or older at the Pleasants Hardware on West Broad Street in Richmond.

We all remember the pictures and just how cold it was last winter.

So to prepare for possibly another cold weather season, hundreds of Richmond seniors are finding out just how easy it is to keep the heat inside their doors. It's all thanks to free, start-up weatherization kits.

Magdalene Mitchell even recruited some of her friends to come down and take advantage of the giveaway. "I feel so very happy that they are giving it out. I wish they would give some more!"

About 500 kits are stacked up to go home. Already in the first half hour, more than 100 kits left the pile.

Inside, you'll find things like weather stripping for your doors and windows, along toilet bags to help you save some water and much more.

It's a big help for Magdalene, especially with everyone these days pinching pennies. "My gas, my oil bill is very high and to have this insulation is wonderful."

Angela Fountain, with the city, helps organize this event. "It's something small but we fell it can make a big difference."

Mary Coleman agrees, as she shows off her money saving kit. "It's very important because so many times you don't get things like this for free. Most of the time you have to buy these products."
