UPDATE: Hearing to determine fate of chimpanzees

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The owner of several chimpanzees in Hanover County is petitioning for a permit that would allow four chimps to stay in Mechanicsville.

The hearing was scheduled for today, but has been deferred. It may not be heard until at least November 10.

You may remember hearing about a pair of chimps that escaped back in August.

We've since learned owner Curtis Shepperson didn't have the proper permits needed to keep a total of six chimps.

He's agreed to send two back to their original owner. There was to be a public hearing tonight to determine if he should be allowed to keep the other four.
