CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Traffic is moving again after an unusual accident in Chesterfield County. A truck missed an overpass on Route 288 and ended up crashing onto Hull Street Road below.
The accident happened shortly before noon and the good news is the driver survived the crash.
But how did he end up missing the overpass in the first place? Police on the scene said this is not the first time they've seen something like this.
The truck plunged off Route 288 and crashed into a embankment at Hull Street Road below. Witnesses told police the truck blew a tire but state police say the truck may have been cut off by another car before losing control. Either way, the truck's driver missed the guardrails.
"He did hit some guardrail as he came off the roadway to the left but not enough to stop the size truck he has," said Sgt. Ray Phillips of the Virginia State Police.
As unusual as this crash may seem, state police say it's similar to another crash in Hopewell recently in which a car missed an overpass and crashed on top of another car driving below.
There was no airbag in the truck. The driver was transported to VCU Medical Center. Police said they do not know the extent of the driver's injuries.
