RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - He is a sex offender, who just a few months ago was teaching at an elementary school in Chesterfield.
Steven Joseph Curtis, is no longer teaching after being accused of filming an underage boy last spring. He was convicted of three counts of unlawful filming or photographing of a minor.
Curtis was arrested last May and is now out of a job and living in a motel along Midlothian Turnpike.
Curtis slammed the door in our face when we asked for his side of the story. The Chesterfield School District said that the second he pled guilty to the crime, his contract was terminated.
Judging from the passing references to Steven Curtis from old documents still posted on the Internet, the one- time 5th grade teacher was a typical member of the Winterpock Elementary team.
But Curtis the teacher was a different man than Curtis the sex offender.
Last spring he was arrested for taping a minor unlawfully. The incident was enough to get him charged with a sex crime.
We tried to get his side of the story tonight at the motel he is living in on Midlothian Turnpike.
"I have no comment," said Curtis before he shut the door to his room.
While Curtis spent every day with kids, there is no evidence that any of his students were threatened.
"We have been assured through law enforcement that this incident does not involve the school or the school division," said Shawn Smith, a spokesman for the school district.
Curtis pled guilty in September. He was sentenced to 6 years in prison, all suspended.
School officials say that Curtis was taken out of the classroom as soon as he was arrested.
He is currently on probation and is listed on the state's sex offender registry.
