New ethanol gas benefits new cars

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Coming soon to a pump near you - a new kind of gasoline called "Ethanol 15."

E-15 is gas that contains up to 15 percent ethanol instead of 10 percent, which is in some blends now.

It has the potential to reduce dependence on foreign oil, cut greenhouse gas emissions, create jobs and help corn farmers.

But the National Resource Defense Council says E-15 may still confuse consumers and damage many cars on the road.

"If they put this in an older car, you have the potential for damage to the engine, for failure of the environmental controls in the car," said Josh Mongerman for the National Resource Defense Council.

The new gas won't work with lawnmowers, boats and many cars. The Environmental Protection Agency says E-15 will work for newer cars and trucks, made after 2007.
