RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The debate on Governor McDonnell's plan to privatize Virginia's liquor monopoly has beer and wine wholesalers increasing its political donations.

The Virginia Public Access Project report shows wholesalers gave more than $70,000 worth of political donations to legislators in the third quarter.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports Republican House Speaker William Howell and Democrat Senate Majority Leader Richard Saslaw each received a total of $30,000 in the quarter from the Virginia beer and wine wholesalers associations.

Saslaw opposes the governor's plan.  Howell says that he endorses the concept of getting Virginia out of the liquor business.
