CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) – Chinese restaurants in our area are on edge tonight -- that's after masked crooks have hit five times in just the last few weeks. Three of those restaurants are in Chesterfield, one in Richmond. And one of those places has been hit twice.
As Randy Lofland picks up his usual order he can't remember feeling unsafe at China Taste in Chesterfield. But the Courthouse Road restaurant made the list.
Police say on September 20th a masked man with a pistol stole money from the register. Ten days later – Jade Garden on Jeff Davis Highway was hit. This month Wah Wah Chinese was hit twice. Owner Vincent Tung told NBC12 what happened.
"You know just walk in you know really quick," said Tung. "I had two five dollar bills in the drawer and some singles and they not even take the singles out they only take 2 five dollars and ran out."
Vincent thinks the same guys robbed him both times- the latest one Tuesday night when three customers witnessed a robbery at China Dragon in Richmond.
The five crimes have the same MO - masked men armed with guns. They strike around 10 at night. They demand you open the register, then they reach in and steal the cash.
"It's unfortunate in this economy. But I feel safe around here," said China Taste customer Gary Robinson.
Gary credits the security cameras at China Taste. China Dragon and Wah Wah Chinese have them too, but when we went to Jade Garden. The owner cursed at us and tried hitting our camera with a stick. He refused to talk to us. We don't know if Jade Garden has boosted security, but the other places did.
"It's not going to change my habit of having to come up here and picking up my favorite Chinese fare," said Lofland.
