Car goes airborne off I-295, crashes on roadway below

HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) - Around 9:50 a.m. Friday, a vehicle headed north on Interstate 295 crashed into another car on the roadway below after going off I-295.

Apparently the driver went off the road and into median, went airborne and dropped down on Western Street in Hopewell, about a 70-foot drop.

Two people were in vehicle that fell of I-295. It hit a Hopewell city vehicle with one person inside. All three were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The 22-year-old driver of the airborne car, Robert D. McKernie, of Raleigh, NC has been charged with reckless driving.  Police said speed was a factor in the crash.  His passenger was Alexander Schwarga, 21, of Raleigh, NC.

The driver of the Hopewell city vehicle has been identified as John Sartor, 42, of Disputanta.
