UPDATE: Deadly crash in South Richmond

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Officials are investigating a deadly accident where a car slammed into a tree in South Richmond.

Our news crew was on the scene moments after the deadly crash happened around 2:30 a.m. Friday morning.

According to police, officers responded to a single vehicle crash in the 5000 block of Warwick Road near Alaska Drive. When officers arrived, they found Jose G. Rivera, 22, of the 1400 block of Clarkson Road, dead at the scene.

The roadway was shut down for much of the morning, but is now back open.

According to police, Rivera's vehicle had been going north on Warwick when it ran off the road and struck a tree. Investigators are seeking information about a blue Mustang and its operator who may have knowledge about what happened.

Crash Team investigators would also like to interview two men Rivera was seen talking with at the 7-11 on Broad Rock Boulevard just 10 minutes prior to the accident.
