RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - An underground fire near 13th and Main streets is sending smoke and flames up through the sidewalks in downtown Richmond.
Richmond Fire Department officials said an underground power grid is on fire and they can't do anything to stop the fire until Dominion Virginia Power shuts off the power to the grid.
There are no reports of injuries but smoke is rising from the city's sidewalks and filling the air. This is going to cause problems for downtown commuters into rush hour.
Ramps from Interstate 95 north and south to Broad Street (Exit 74) and the ramp to Franklin Street from I-95 south were closed for about an hour and were reopened by 5:30 p.m.
The Pocahontas Building, which is located at the southeast corner of Capitol Square, was evacuated due to the power outage.
The Virginia Commonwealth University computer system is down due to the fire. This apparently does not affect the VCU Medical Center.
