RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Crews have fixed a broken water main in Henrico County's West End, but it is still causing some headaches this afternoon. This is happening at the intersection of Hungary and Kingsrow Drive east of West End Drive.
The water main pipe broke around 4 a.m. Crews placed a new pipe around 6 a.m. We're told the work took longer than expected to complete because crews had trouble getting to the broken water main.
Henrico Utilities tells us that the water main broke where two pipes come together. Those two pipes were less than 50 years old and were not on the list to be replaced in the county.
Crews also had trouble getting to the broken water main. Those crews actually had to bring in extra equipment to break the soil underneath the ground up. We're told that soil was extremely hard.
We caught up with Ken and Gloria Green. They were without water overnight because of the problem. "We later realized we didn't have water coming out of the faucet then you get into issues like flushing the toilet and showering," says Ken. "Really you take things for granted and then when you don't have them you begin to appreciate them so I'm glad it's back."
The couple was happy that crews were able to work through the night to fix the problem. Also, they said that the county actually came by with water bottles for people living in the area. The Green's did not need the water though, since they had a water filter in their house already.
