Giant eyeball stolen from Science Museum

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The Science Museum of Virginia says they were just trying to do something different to promote a new Halloween-themed exhibit at the museum by wrapping the Kugel Ball as an eyeball, but they say it didn't last long before thieves stole the $4,000 wrap.

"We're a little disappointed," said Richard Conti, director at the Science Museum. "No pun intended, but it was a bit of a poke in the eye to the Science Museum. We're just trying to have a little fun and let everyone enjoy it and unfortunately someone decided they'd rather have it than us."

Surveillance video shows two people by the eye and a minute later the wrap is gone. What's confusing both police and museum officials is what someone would want with a giant eyeball cover.

"This is not a normal theft where people would generally go to say a pawn shop or try to sell it on the Internet," said John Collamore, Capitol Police.

"Perhaps someone is starting Halloween a little early I guess," said Conti. "Not sure what you're going to do with a giant wrap unless you have a big eight and a half foot globe somewhere in your house."

Museum officials say they're considering replacing the eye cover but say they won't take their eye off the next one.

"We'll have to keep an eye out for it,"he said with a laugh. "I couldn't help it."

Capitol Police say they've gone door to door looking for the eye cover and have a few leads they are following. If you have any information you're asked to call Capitol Police.
