HANOVER, VA (WWBT) – A big step for the Hanover County Parks and Recreation department. Starting next month, you can register for programs like summer camp online. Staff members say it will be another option to make their customers lives' easier.

Signing up for programs online will be similar to shopping online. A few options; a few clicks; add to basket and checkout.

"What our citizens and all customers will be able to do is not only browse our program offerings, but be able to register for almost all our program offerings, and they'll be able to view facility availability online also," said Recreation program director Marcy Durrer.

Online registration has been a work in progress, and staff members are excited to finally see it become a reality. They expect one of the biggest changes to be in the types of phone calls they get.

"The phones ring now with people saying, ‘hey, is there space in a belly dancing class; my kids are so interested in mad science, but the deadline was yesterday, can I still register?' Now they won't have to call us with those questions; now they'll probably call us with, ‘I forgot my user name and password questions' or ‘how do I do this online,'" said Durrer.

Another big change: summer camp registration. Hanover's summer program is so popular; people often camp out the night before to make sure their child gets a spot. Online registration will make it much easier.

"We will be promoting how and when folks can register for the summer program probably late winter, early spring, in that February/March time frame once we know where we will actually be holding summer camp this year," she said.

Folks can continue to register at the office or mail in their application. Online registration will just mean another option.

"Now when they are at home in their pajamas 10 o'clock at night and remember that class starts on Monday, now they can relax and do it from the comfort of their own home," Durrer said.

The website will go live the first week in November. Once the website goes live you'll be able to access it through the department's page on the counties website.
