CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A woman is dead and man is in the hospital after an early morning accident on Chippenham Parkway.

It all happened around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning in the north bound lanes at the Belmont exit.

Police said the SUV hit the guard rail, overturned, and slid 200 feet before coming to a rest on the side.

The female passenger, 25-year-old Ashley C. Harlow or Richmond, died at the scene.

The driver, Andrew J. Abbate, 26, of Chesterfield County, was taken to VCU Medical Center. He has been charged with DUI and other charges are pending. He is expected to be okay. The driver was talking to investigators at the scene of the crash before being taken to the hospital.

The crash is under investigation, but police say alcohol is a factor. Neither was wearing their seat belt.

The SUV involved in the single vehicle crash was heavily damaged. We're told the woman killed was partially pinned underneath the SUV and the jaws of life were used to pull her out.

The SUV was towed away from the scene just before 6:45am and now we are told the accident is now cleared. So, that means all lanes and exit ramps are open on Chippenham North.
