Immigration officials issue detainer for man charged with DUI, involuntary manslaughter

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA (WWBT) - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued a detainer for Juan Hernandez-Paneda.

ICE would not comment on his immigration status.

He was arrested Tuesday on several charges stemming from a Saturday accident in Colonial Heights that left one man dead.

Police said Juan Hernandez-Paneda, 31, was traveling southbound on I-95 when he lost control of his Tahoe and struck a tractor trailer on the right shoulder.  His front seat passenger, Fortino Mendoza-Pacheco, was killed and the back seat passenger was seriously injured.

The Colonial Heights Commonwealth Attorney's Office charged Juan Hernandez-Paneda with involuntary manslaughter, DUI, refusal to submit to a blood/alcohol test, and driving on a suspended license.

Hernandez-Paneda was arrested at his residence in Petersburg early Tuesday morning without incident.

He is being held in the Riverside Regional Jail.  He was arraigned Wednesday.  His next scheduled court date is November 16.
