Proposal to protect victims from abuse

Posted by Shawn Maclauchlan

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - One Virginia lawmaker wants to make it easier to get protective orders for people in abusive dating relationships.

The Times-Dispatch reports Delegate Joe Morrissey wants to make that proposal in the General Assembly early next year.

Morrissey claims he was inspired after the murder of University of Virginia student and lacrosse player Yeardley Love.

Her ex-boyfriend George Huguely has been charged in her death.

Morrissey wants to expand Virginia's law to include victims who are being abused by a boyfriend or girlfriend without any requirement that they live together or have children together.
