One dead, two injured after interstate accident

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA (WWBT) – Speed and alcohol may be to blame for a deadly overnight accident on I-95.

Around 2:30 Saturday morning police say an SUV traveling south on 95 just north of Temple Ave. lost control and ran into a tractor trailer parked on the side of the road.

Police say one of the SUV's passengers, 21-year-old Fortimo Mendoza, died at the scene.

The driver, 31-year-old Juan Hernandez-Pandeda, and a second passenger received serious but non life-threatening injuries.

Both were transported to VCU Medical Center for treatment.

Police say Pandeda will likely face charges pending a full investigation.

According to police speed and alcohol are factors in this crash.

The driver of the tractor trailer was unharmed though police say he faces charges for being improperly stopped on the interstate.
