PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) – Petersburg High School gets a financial boost from a famous alumnus. Actor Blair Underwood visited his old high school today and donated $10,000. During a speech, Underwood encouraged students to work hard and to believe in themselves.

The actor is also in town for the premiere party of his new NBC drama, "The Event." Underwood plays the President of the United States.

So, what exactly is "The Event?"

"The Event is something to come. I'll tell you you'll find out a lot of the answers by the second episode," said Underwood.

The show is about a man investigating the disappearance of his wife. He ends up unraveling the biggest cover up in U.S. history. A screening of the show will be held in Petersburg Saturday night.

Preparations on campus of VSU are underway. NBC12 spent time with the actor as he walked the halls of his old high school. He paid a visit to the principal's office.

"When I was there 25 years ago it was under different circumstances," said Underwood.

Through a national online voting contest -- Petersburg won the free screening party.

"What's encouraging to me and hopefully encouraging to other people is to watch this community come together for a common good -- that common good happens to a screening of a TV show," said Underwood.

If you have a ticket for Saturday's premier party doors open at 5:30 p.m. You're encouraged to arrive early. The screening starts at 7 p.m. "The Event" will air on NBC12 starting Monday night at nine o'clock.
