HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Business and government leaders in Henrico want you to shop- and save- in the county.
They will soon roll out the "Henrico Advantage Card."
News of the card program is sweet music to the ears of Chris Grimes. He co-owns the Carvel ice cream shop on Staples Mill Road.
"Any coupons we can offer, any specials we can offer to our customers, be it new ones or regulars, then that's good for us as a business and it's a good thing for the customer," said Grimes.
The Henrico Advantage Card will hook shoppers up with deals at county businesses. It's similar to "buy local" initiatives in other places, but with a few signature touches.
"The card, having the businesses directly involved in these types of promotions and offers, and the residents being able to obtain the card for free," said county finance director John Vithoulkas.
The card's companion web site will list the participating businesses, along with specific deals cardholders can get.
The program emerged from discussions between the county and several business groups, including Joe Winston's Henrico Business Leaders.
"I think everyone knows the state of our economy right now, and our businesses large and small are looking for all the business they can get," said Winston.
The cards will be tied in with Henrico's 400th anniversary, which the county plans to celebrate next year. They will be available for pick-up at Richmond area BB&T banks and other businesses.
Business owners like Grimes are looking forward to the program's official launch, which is still at least 2 weeks away. He hopes customers will share in his enthusiasm.
The card's availability is not limited to Henrico residents. You can call the county for more information. There is a dedicated phone number for card questions- that number is 501-4995.
