RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A held a the Richmond City Jail was pronounced dead this afternoon at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.
A medical emergency was called after the prisoner collapsed to the floor of a housing unit. Security personnel along with medical staff responded, called 911, and began administering emergency life-saving procedures, according to the sheriff's office.
The Richmond Ambulance Authority arrived on the scene at 1:49 p.m. and transported the prisoner to VCUMC, where medical personnel pronounced the time of death at 2:45 p.m.
The Richmond Medical Examiner's Office was notified and an autopsy is scheduled for early next week. While there were no signs of foul play, the Richmond City Sheriff's Office and the Richmond Police Department are conducting a joint investigation.
