RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A Charlottesville entrepreneur won an international contest to build the world's first viable car that can exceed 100 miles on a single gallon of gas.

The Times-Dispatch reports Oliver Kuttner and his team won a $5 million Progressive Insurance prize.

The very light car beat out more than 60 competitors from around the world.

The contest required the vehicle to travel 200 miles in range, meet rigorous safety tests, and achieve a minimum of 100 miles per gallon of fuel.

Kuttner vehicle runs 102 miles per gallon and runs on a mixture of gasoline and ethanol.
