RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Funeral services will be held Friday morning for the state trooper who died during a training exercise.
Hundreds are expected at Trooper Mark Barrett's funeral.
The 41-year-old was on the state police search and recovery team. He was in the middle of a diving exercise in Lake Anna when another trooper noticed something was wrong.
The medical examiner's office says his death was an accident. He likely drowned because of an underlying heart problem.
Trooper Barrett is the first diver to die in the line of duty since the squad was created nearly 50 years ago.
His funeral starts Friday at 10 a.m. It will be at the Church of the Epiphany on Smoketree Drive in Chesterfield.
We're told there will be no funeral procession.
State police will pay tribute to Trooper Barrett with full honors. He leaves behind a wife and two children.
