CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -  Mandatory water restrictions begin for people who live in Chesterfield County on Wednesday.

Just from pictures sent to us by a viewer, you can see the impact from the record-low water levels in Lake Chesdin.

Starting at midnight, some people could face a stiff fine for doing watering their lawn.

Mandatory restrictions mean your limited to watering your lawn to certain days of the week. People with odd addresses can't water on Wednesday.

On the eve of mandatory water restrictions in Chesterfield, Martha Mathews set out sprinklers to salvage what mother nature destroyed.

"We lost the whole yard in this heat," said Mathews.

Only days ago, Mathews put her green thumb to work on her yellow yard. Then came some discouraging news.

"We just put grass seed on it and I just heard the water restrictions are starting so but we'll do what we have to do," said Mathews.

Heather Craven is in the same boat.

"We've been gearing up we planted new seed on Saturday so we're trying to get it established before they put restrictions in," said Craven.

Craven has an even address.  So under the mandatory restrictions, she can only water on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Mathews address ends with an odd number, so she's limited to Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Watering is prohibited on Mondays.

During mandatory restrictions, you can get away with watering with a bucket.  This one holds four and a half gallons.  But your limited to five gallons per day.

Rule-breakers face fines. The first offense could set you back $100.

Not worth the risk, said Mathews.

"It's dead we'll do without it we'll have to wait until next spring if we have to it will eventually rain," said Mathews.

One other rule for Chesterfield: if you like to wash your car at home, you can only do it one day a week using a hand-held hose, with a shut-off nozzle.
