RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Recently I met a couple who was visiting Richmond for the first time. They told me how pleasantly surprised they were that we had such a beautiful community.
They had only driven through Richmond before on Interstate 95, so their total impression of Richmond was formed from the interstate.
Well, that's unfair and it's a little like forming an opinion of an entire house by only visiting the garage.
But the fact is, the view from I-95 is the only impression many travelers will ever have of Richmond. So our challenge is to create a better first impression.
That thought brings to mind our baseball stadium at the convergence of interstates 95 and 64.
The Diamond is the home to the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The Squirrels led the league in attendance in their very first season.
Richmond proved we will support a quality sports and entertainment product. Now it's time to make a commitment for a new ballpark.
The location has been debated. But the current location provides an opportunity to create both an exciting stadium and a visually compelling statement to millions of travelers. You never know. If we build it they might come. And just like the couple I met, they might even stay.
