RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Petersburg will soon get a taste of Hollywood. It won a National Competition to host a premier screening of the new NBC show "The Event" which stars Petersburg native Blair Underwood.
Frank Underwood didn't waste anytime to help put Petersburg in the national spotlight. He called the city's mayor and the local newspaper when he heard the city could win a special premier screening of "The Event."
"I was the second person to be registered in this whole contest. I don't know who number one is, I want to find out who that is," he said.
The show stars his son, Actor Blair Underwood who is a Petersburg native. "This is something he can stick his chest out bout and say look what my hometown did," Frank said.
For several weeks, people were asked to go online and with a simple click on "Demand It."
"People want us to win. At one point it was to be in the top five but then I realized we had the potential to be number one and I love being number one," Frank said. Petersburg ranked number one with over 3,000 votes.
Mayor Annie Mickens beamed with pride. "People want to have those wonderful events in their lives and for us this is a once in a life time event," she said.
When you think of Petersburg you may think of a small city, but recently this small city showed it had a big heart and whole lot of commitment, beating out major cities like L.A., New York, and Dallas all to bring the national spotlight to our area.
"I must tell you it has been incredible to watch the way Petersburg and the surrounding areas and Richmond of course have gotten involved in this whole campaign to have a screening of the event there," said actor Blair Underwood.
Via satellite, Blair talked about beginning his acting career at Petersburg High School. Since day one of the competition, he's been pushing for Petersburg.
"I doubt if I will be able to make it there because of our shooting schedule but it has never been about that, it has been about the community being excited about this show that is getting a lot buzz. I am just really humble and excited to be a part of it," he said.
For Petersburg, the win is more than just a bunch of clicks online to win a contest. It's about a community uniting, with unity they won and with unity they will celebrate.
"It will be like a little bit of Hollywood, a little bit of Hollywood in this great historic town of Petersburg," said Mayor Mickens.
The official numbers for the contest haven't been released -- we will bring those to you, along with details on the screening party in the days to come. Also, look for a one on one interview with Blair about his role in the new NBC show "The Event," which airs September 20 on NBC12.
