PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Shortly after midnight police found 21-year-old Jonathan Williams shot in the head at the Landmark Apartments.

Only nine hours later they arrested 21-year-old Michael Hylton and charged him with murder.

The people who live in Stately Court say they were shaken from their slumber by as many as 16 gunshots around 12:30 Sunday morning.

Keisha Bailey has lived here all her life.

"You hear gunshots right on the corner of your building, that's very scary," said Bailey. "The three shots was right here."

It was only after Petersburg Police arrived on scene that she felt comfortable going outside.

"The whole section, everything was blocked off and they had police cars everywhere," she said.

Bailey says there were a number of cars parked in the lot last night including a green SUV

She says when she came outside she saw a man in the driver's seat who had been shot to death.

Most people were not willing to talk on camera.

They say the victim, 21-year-old Jonathan Williams did not live in the complex, but he often visited friends.

Sources tell us the shooting was retaliation but they're still investigating the details behind the motive.

In addition to a first degree murder charge, suspect Michael Hylton, is facing four counts of attempted murder because police say he shot into a group standing around that green SUV.

We've also learned Hylton has quite a rap sheet.

Earlier this year he was arrested for distribution of marijuana, possession of a firearm and robbery.

As her three kids play near the spot where a man lost his life hours earlier, Bailey thinks of the worst case.

"Young boys out here getting killed, a child will probably be next," she said. "Hopefully it don't happen."
