RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Police say a woman was raped and found behind a vacant school building, Wednesday.
Police found the victim behind A.V. Norrell Elementary school in the 2100 block of Fendall Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Police say the victim knew her attacker, but so far no arrests have been made.
At night, the area behind Norrell Elementary is pitch black and quiet. There are no lights and hardly anybody out. But somehow, someone spotted a woman in an unusual setting and immediately called the cops.
Police say a caller claimed there was a nude woman on the ground behind the school. When officers arrived, they found a partially clothed female who had been assaulted and took her to VCU Medical Center for treatment.
Just across the street from the school, Maria Fletcher and her daughters couldn't believe what had happened.
"It was like around five cop cars, ambulances, fire trucks, everything the whole area was lit up," said Fletcher.
"A lot of cop cars, it was fire trucks ambulances and I got scared, never seen it like this over here, it's really nice over here," said Fletcher's daughter, Jonel Brown.
Norrell Elementary has been a temporary home for Richmond's North Avenue Library.
The library closed at 6 that evening, but neighbors say a kid's football game had the lights on until about 8:30.
"Yes, it does [make me mad], and it actually scares me because no, she can't be out past 6 o'clock," said Fletcher.
Fletcher says she's afraid a vacant school is a target for crime.
"They need to do something about this school. It's a nice school and they're not using it for anything," she said.
