HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - Hanover County park-goers will soon see a number of improvements. The parks and recreation department has a new citizen-drive master plan. A new community center and more walking trails are among many things on the to-do list.
One of the things people wanted to see more of were picnic areas so a new shelter and storage facility were built at Hanover Wayside Park -- it's all part of a new master plan that was formulated based on community needs.
"A number of individuals and groups came out to support passive recreation in our parks," said Marcy Durrer of Hanover County Parks and Recreation. "Not only shelters and walking trails, but just open green space, places where you can come with your dog, come fly a kite, with the kids and just let them run, so both passive and active activities within our parks system."
Short term, park goers will continue to see smaller improvements like this over the next five years. But there's a long term goal too of providing more indoor recreational activities.
"We are looking to build one or more community centers throughout the county to meet those needs," Durrer said.
Hanover County horse lovers are also up for consideration. There are more than 12,000 horses in the county, so the master plan is also looking to meet the needs of the growing equestrian community.
