RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – The computer problem at the Department of Social Services has been repaired, but what it left behind is a mountain of paperwork that could delay benefits being sent out as scheduled on the first of the month.
Debi Stevenson can usually expect a payment of just about $250 deposited in her account around the 28th or 29th of each month.
We are past August 29 and her account is still empty. In her mind that is keeping her from being able to get off of public assistance.
"I am missing two days of job searches because of it. It sets me back what I would consider a great deal," said Debi.
Debi's payments aren't late. Actually they usually come a few days early. The Department of Social Services is still trying to get back up to speed after not having access to their computer system. That means farming through paperwork that has been neglected for several days.
"If our applications stay up and functioning, and online, there may be no delays, so that is our goal and that is what we want to work toward," said VDSS spokeswoman Marianne S. McGhee.
"On time" is the first of the month. DSS can't say for sure that it will meet that deadline, but they are informing their clients, they are working as fast as they can to get the payments out by Wednesday.
And DSS is asking clients to not contact the agency until after September 1. If you haven't received your benefits by Thursday, there may be an issue that has to be resolved.
