RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The countdown is on Monday morning for parents - the first day of school is next week.

Health experts want to remind you just how important it is to make sure your children have the right immunizations.

This is the last full week before classes start and while you're getting pencils, notebooks and backpacks, add shots to your back to school list.

State law requires all students to have vaccinations before the first day of school.

There are some slight changes this year for some grades. Kindergartners must have a second chicken pox shot. For 6th graders, it's the Tdap booster that's a must have.

Health experts say the time to act is now.

School systems also want you to remember that if your child starts kindergarten, your little one will need a physical exam.

School leaders say the best thing to do is talk to your family doctor.

You can also call the health department - it offers back to school shots for free.
