CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) – With a soccer tournament scheduled for Labor Day weekend construction crews at SportsQuest in Chesterfield are working over-time.

It takes groups of men with heavy-duty clamps to piece together a state-of-the-art field at SportsQuest. Blankets of the soft, cushy material go in row-by-row.

"This now becomes one of the largest turf facilities in the entire country," said Tim O'Sullivan, Executive Director of Soccer at SportsQuest. He has a background in college soccer.

"Turf fields, the artificial turf fields, these are as good as I've ever seen," said O'Sullivan.

Today he watches as crews move through one of the 9 fields at the complex. The first part of the $250-million facility has to be ready for an inaugural soccer tournament that starts in less than 10 days.

"We weren't shooting for the largest tournament; we just wanted to make sure that we have players playing on Labor Day."

Bryan Costriel, a freshman and John Tyler Community College, can't wait to take to the padded field. When asked if he will be playing in the tournament this weekend he said, "Yes. I'm really excited to be one of the first on the field. It will be fun."

He plays on for a club team. As piles of sand are scattered on the forever green ground Bryan points out the perks.

"If they're smooth it really helps the game. And if it's soft like this your game plan's going to change completely," he said.

While turf lacks in some parts and only one field has painted game lines, Tim says don't worry.

"The game starts Saturday morning. A week from Saturday we're ready to go," O'Sullivan said.

Construction workers have a lot of work ahead of them. It took 2 days just to lay the turf that only covers part of one field. Seven of the nine fields at the complex are expected to be ready for game day Labor Day weekend.
