NBC12 Viewpoint: August in Richmond

By Don Richards, NBC12 Regional Vice President and General Manager

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - There are a few unmistakable signs that we have entered the final 30 days of summer here in Richmond. Of course stifling humidity has the starring role. Traffic is a bit lighter but heaven help you if you are heading east on I-64.

Thousands of Purple Martins have returned to roost in Shockoe Bottom. Thousands of VCU students have returned to circle the Fan looking for parking…and a place to roost. They will soon replace the Purple Martins in the Bottom.

This week we have watched another ancient August tradition unfold. QB Brett Favre has warily circled his summer training camp while thousands waited for him to fly in and take his reserved spot in the highest branch. Mid August is here when optimism and amnesia take a summer place together in the psyche of the Washington Redskins fans. Guilty as charged.

The rhythm of the last 30 days of summer in Richmond is casual yet forward looking. In just a few short weeks the pulse and pace quickens and we celebrate the return of our prime time programs. But that's a topic for another day. Meanwhile, enjoy the annual rituals and repeats of August life in Richmond. This is exactly what we were looking forward to last January.
