JMU stepping up underage drinking enforcement

HARRISONBURG, VA (WWBT) - James Madison University say it is stepping up enforcement of underage drinking laws.

The school president sent a letter to students this week outlining changes in school policy.

It's all part of an effort to change the "negative alcohol culture" on and off campus.

Those changes include notifying parents after the first alcohol offense.

The university also is asking managers and owners of off-campus apartment complexes not to permit illegal outdoor parties.

The actions come after an off-campus party in April that resulted in more than 30 arrests and 42 injuries.
