CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA (WWBT) - The teen who police say shot one person at a popular Chesterfield park is expected in court Thursday. The shooting is just one of several crimes that forced Chesterfield Police to boost patrols.

Thursday a judge will decide if there is enough evidence to link 18-year-old Matthew Vance to the crime. He was arrested last month after police say he shot another teen at Rockwood Park.

The shooting in question happened around 7pm on July 20th near the basketball courts.

Chesterfield County says its 45 parks are safe, but some folks say they will still keep an eye on what's around them.

Several park shootings and racist graffiti this summer forced Chesterfield County to put new security measures in place.

Now, police are boosting patrols and the parks department is turning off the lights at the basketball courts at 9pm instead of 10:30pm.

Matthew Vance faces several charges, including malicious wounding, possession of marijuana, and two firearms charges.
