NBC12 Viewpoint: Vacation time and burglaries

By Don Richards, NBC12 Regional Vice President and General Manager

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - It probably won't come as any surprise to you that August is the most popular vacation month. If you're about to leave for yours, you might find this next fact a little worrisome.

August is also the month with the most burglaries across Virginia.

Is there a correlation? Well this next point would suggest that there is.

The greatest number of burglaries take place between 4 and 6 p.m. That's broad daylight.

Obviously we make it too easy for the bad guys.  So before you head out, here are just a few tips. You've heard them before but consider it a checklist.

Nothing attracts unwanted visitors quite like piled up newspapers or mail. Get a neighbor to pick yours up. You can even arrange to have delivery suspended during your absence.

Have an inside light or two on in the evening. Timers are easy to hook up.

Keep the lawn mowed and don't leave a message on your voice mail that says you are away.

Here's an easy one. Close your garage door and lock your doors.  People get in a hurry and forget.

Some local police departments will even drive by your house while you are away as a vacation watch. Go to their website to see if yours offers this service.

A few easy steps taken before your vacation might save you a very unwelcome home. So when you leave home...leave the impression you are there and have a nice vacation.
