SPOTSYLVANIA, VA (WWBT) – A man was arrested Sunday night on several charges, including felony domestic assault and felony child endangerment, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office.
On Sunday, deputies responded to a residence off of Gordon Road in reference to a domestic disturbance. Upon their arrival, the victim alleged that her boyfriend, Thurman Spears assaulted her after she would not give him her car keys.
She said he poured gasoline on her vehicle and threatened to set the car on fire if she denied him the vehicle. During the assault, Thurman was able to get the keys away from the victim and fled in her 2002 Buick Century.
Warrants were obtained on Thurman and submitted her vehicle as stolen. Several hours later, police located the vehicle in the area of Southpoint Parkway. Police tried to pull him over, but the driver failed to stop. The pursuit continued to Courthouse Road to the area of Foster Road. Once on Smith Station Road the driver of the Buick began driving erratically.
As police neared the driveway where the original incident took place, he spotted the Buick pulling in. The officer saw a black male, later identified as Thurman Spears, exit the vehicle and run toward the rear of the home.
The officer followed Thurman to the rear of the home, where the man entered the home and grabbed a large knife from the kitchen. The officer ordered Thurman to drop the weapon several times, which he refused. Thurman ran to a back bedroom and barricaded himself.
The female victim ran from a nearby bathroom and screamed that her children were in the room with him. Several verbal attempts were made to Thurman to come out and released the children, who were ages 5 and 7 years of age. Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office Crisis Negotiation and Emergency Response Teams responded to the residence.
Thurman was removed from the bedroom by Emergency Response Members without incident. The children were unharmed. Thurman Spears was admitted to Mary Washington Hospital for a prior medical condition. He will be remanded to Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
