NBC12 Viewpoint: National Night Out

By Don Richards, NBC12 Regional Vice President and General Manager

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) –There's a book out called Losing Our Cool. The author, Stan Cox, has written it to make a case that our dependence on air conditioning has led to problems in our society.

For example he writes that before air conditioning, families gathered on their front porch to cool off and talk with neighbors. That created a bond and a stronger neighborhood understanding to help protect one another.

He might have a point there. But after two months of record heat, I am still a big fan of the AC.

That said, the National Night Out this week created opportunities for neighbors all over Richmond to venture outside and get to know each other better.

There were hundreds of events across town and many were attended by members of the law enforcement community. This night out made it possible for children and young people to visit with police in a relaxed setting and build trust.

NBC 12 had a group of Richmond prosecutors on Call 12 taking your calls of questions and concerns about problem areas in the city. By all accounts the National Night Out is a growing success each year.

I don't think we need to do anything as drastic as having a national "turn off your air conditioning week," but point taken Mr. Todd. Losing Our Cool for a night can be a great idea.
