CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Virginia shoppers are saving an extra five percent on back-to-school items this tax-free weekend.

And needless to say, the malls were packed with families trying to get in on some of the deals.

Summer vacation is near its end for kids.

Now comes the exciting part, shopping for school supplies.

"Back-to-school clothes, shoes we're getting now, notebooks and pencils all that good stuff," said shopping mother Lisa Brooks.

"I'm getting some jeans, some shirts and shoes," said shopping student Travis Richman.

With all the sales retailers are making, it's no surprise the Chesterfield Towne Center tax free weekend is the third biggest shopping weekend after Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Saving five percent on school supplies may not sound like big money to some, but mall marketing director Denise Smith says it's also a time when other retailers in the mall offer their own great deals.

Everywhere you turn you see signs that read: sale, sale, sale.

"A lot of the stores are running great sales this time of the year getting rid of that end of season staff even some good sales on the fall items they have in already," Smith said.
