Infant dies in early morning accident

PRINCE GEORGE, VA (WWBT) – A family trip to the beach turns deadly after police say fatigue caused a driver to lose control of her vehicle and run off the road.

Around 5:30 Saturday morning police say 49-year-old Rose Owens was driving south on I-295 just north of Rt. 630 when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into some trees.

Police say a total of five people were inside the vehicle: Rose, her husband, their daughter, granddaughter and a family friend.

Police say Rose's granddaughter, 1-year-old Anaiya Owens, died at the scene.

The husband received life threatening injuries and was taken by helicopter to VCU Medical Center.

Rose and her daughter were transported to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg with serious injuries.

The family friend received only minor injuries and was treated on-scene.

Police say everyone in the vehicle was wearing a safety belt and the infant was properly restrained in a child seat.

The family was on their way to Myrtle Beach from Maryland on a family trip according to police.

Rose Owens is now facing reckless driving charges.
