Explosion rocks Henrico neighborhood

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – A huge explosion rocks a Henrico neighborhood just feet away from where a family was sleeping. It happened in the 10300 block of Avenham Way in Henrico County just off Quioccasin.

Fire investigators believe it might have been fireworks but they're treating this as an arson or bomb investigation. The family immediately called the fire department when they heard the explosion go off.

A Henrico neighborhood got a rude awakening early Monday morning. Someone set off an explosive inside a mailbox.

"And we just heard this boom!" said victim, Dean Featherston. "And it was not a firecracker. It didn't sound like a firecracker. I said it's a bomb! A bomb went off in our neighborhood! It's like whoa!"

The noise was enough to wake Dean, his wife, Jane and their neighbors up at 6:50 in the morning. While the explosion only destroyed their mailbox, a short time later it could have caused some serious damage.

"Just a few minutes later my daughter and I would have been backing out of the driveway," said Jane Featherston. "We could have gotten injured by it. If you were standing here it could have hurt you."

The Featherston's bought a new mailbox after the fireworks or bomb left their old one in pieces. Smoke from the explosion could be seen all the way down the block.

"It had blown the mailbox out and the door was over there next to the curb over there," said Dean.

The Featherston's 2 cars full of gas sit in the driveway just feet away from where the device exploded. They have just one question for the person who did this.

"I want to know why...." said Dean.

"Yeah, I'd like to know why too. I mean why us?" added Jane.

While the incident is still under investigation, the couple has reason to believe that this was not just a teen prank.
