Burglars targeting homes while residents vacation

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Within the past week, Richmond residents have returned home to a shocking surprise. Someone has broken into their homes while they were gone and cleaned them out. The burglars struck seven homes on Cofer Road, Olive Avenue, Meadow, Grace and Lombardy Streets. Some as recently as Saturday.

"I came home and my door was open," said burglary victim, Carrie Meyer. "The front door was wide open. I noticed that the frame was kind of detached from the wall a little bit. It looks like somebody might have just kicked it through."

Meyer lives in a community with an active neighborhood watch. The crooks however are also watching and striking at the most convenient times. The crooks wait until people are on vacation before burglarizing their home. Some aren't even gone for 24 hours before the crooks break in.

"The back door was kicked open and the house had been ransacked and everything," said burglary victim, Sharon Harvey.

Harvey and her family were just gone for the day when the burglars hit. AAA has noted that July and August are prime time for home break-ins. To prevent them they suggest before you leave, take inventory of the things inside your home. Also, ask a neighbor to park their car in your driveway while you're gone. Lastly keep you're A/C on auto and your lights on timers. Despite the break-in, Harvey considers her family lucky. While the thieves ransacked her home, they took nothing.
