Chesterfield party leads to 14 charged with underage drinking

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - An impromptu party ends with more than a dozen people charged with underage drinking. Police say it happened Saturday at a home in western Chesterfield County.

The homeowners and police say a home off of Waterfall Crest Way was chaos early Saturday morning. The homeowners were out of town. Their 17-year-old daughter was home with two friends, one of them got a text asking what they were up to.

Off camera, the mother says minutes later carloads of young people, with alcohol in tow, took over her front yard, some made their way inside. Loud music triggered a call to police.

"Once officers responded to the scene they realized that there was a possibility that there might be underage drinking going on," said Chesterfield police captain David Stone.

According to police reports once officers were inside the home they found party goers hiding in the garage, basement, attic and under the beds.

Police charged 14 people, including four juveniles, with underage drinking. Neither the parents nor the daughter and her friends face any trouble. Sharyl Adams with S.A.F.E., a substance abuse prevention program, says this can happen anywhere.

"We do know that things tend to happen, particularly when parents are out of town," said Sharyl Adams. "Even if you have good kids, it is really good to have that back up there in the community."

She suggests asking a neighbor to check in with young people- and says parents need to explain the dangers of drinking.

"There could have been kids who left that party, driving, that were involved in an accident."

Even though she wasn't responsible, the mother says she would have felt awful if anything happened to the group.

In fact, the family has created a plan in case a spontaneous party ever happens again. Their children will not tell friends if they are home alone and they will call the police immediately if any unwanted guests show up.
