RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Police are trying to figure out who spray-painted hateful messages on the basketball courts, the concession stands, and random park signs at Rockwood Park in Chesterfield County.
Police are looking for vandals who spray painted the obscenities. Clean up began removing the messages first thing this morning.
Some of the graffiti is sprayed on the basketball court, which is right near the shooting from just last week at the same park.
Swastika's are painted right at the entrance to Rockwood Park and all around. And that's not all. The racist graffiti is much worse than that. Some so bad, we couldn't publish them.
But, Donnetta Wells saw it all on her walk this morning.
"Wow. I am seeing serious, serious, what appears to be new racial problems. I'm seeing signs with some curse words with Obama on it," says Donnetta.
Police were out here bright and early, snapping pictures and surveying the extensive damage.
From the concession stand, where some of the worst graffiti is, to the sidewalk, light pole, signs, even on the new basketball court and backboards.
We're told this is some of the worst graffiti ever sprayed at Rockwood Park.
Earnell Kirland is out here with his niece and nephew. "It's crazy for the kids to see this and growing up all around this racism. It's bad for the community."
I think it's disgusting. It's going to cost the county to clean it up. The entire park crew is spending the better part of this day cleaning up the mess, removing the graffiti.
I'm told if all of it is cleaned up by the end of day, crews will be happy.
Now, after this, and last week's shooting, many are asking for stepped up patrols. "Definitely more security. More security patrols. They may need to close the park earlier," says Wells.
Park crews think kids walking around are responsible for this. That's because most of the park is locked to cars after 11 p.m.
And, although some people are asking for more security, a park leader tells me he thinks the security here is okay for now. But that could change if this continues.
