WASHINGTON, DC (AP) - Days of brutal heat have been broken by storms that left hundreds of thousands of people from Washington to New York without electricity.

A woman in Maryland died when a tree fell on her car. There are also reports that a
6-year-old boy from Loudon County died as a result of the storms.

And a sailor is missing on the Long Island sound after falling overboard.

The storms knocked down dozens of trees. The worst of the power outages occurred in the Washington, D.C. region.

More than 293,000 customers in the district and two Maryland counties had no electricity. Numerous traffic signals are still out.
