RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Family members, friends, Richmond police officers and even city council members came out to take part in a vigil for murder victim Keith Bates. Thursday night's vigil, however, had a different feel as an arrest in the case was made just hours before.
"I'm just glad because it's really some closure and we are dealing with our sons because they are stressed," said Bates' son's mother. "They are angry. So it's basically we are coming together to deal with them."
Police believe 29-year-old Elsumakeel Lamar is responsible for Bates' murder. Heading into the vigil with the recent developments in the case made tonight especially hard for the family.
"It was very emotional but on the other hand it was happy and sad," said the victim's brother, Alonzo Bates. "Happy in the spirit but sad because I'm going to miss my brother."
There were about 100 people at tonight's vigil. All were thankful for a chance to join together and remember the life of their neighbor and friend.
