RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – A Richmond police officer and two others are in the hospital after a car accident. It happened around 8:00 Tuesday night at the intersection of Jhanke and Leicester Roads in south Richmond.
We're told the officer's car slammed into the back of the other driver's car causing it to fly across a ditch and into some trees in a neighbor's yard. Now police are investigating just how this accident happened.
One witness we spoke with, say she saw the whole thing and barely missed being a part of this accident.
"I'm glad I stopped when I did, but I saw the second officer coming so I hit my flashers, I got out, checked on the officer in the first car, by then the second officer was there," said Carolyn Moore.
Police have not confirmed the exact details of the crash because it's still under investigation. However, Moore tells us the driver of the car was trying to get out of the way of the fast approaching cop car, but couldn't. The officer's car "did" have its lights on, apparently responding to a call.
"I went over to the young man in the car...they were dazed and trying to get up and get out and I told them both please don't move. Stay where you are," said Moore.
"I didn't hear anything after all of that out here and I didn't hear anything," said one local resident.
This woman lives 2 houses down from where the crash happened and was surprised to come outside and see all the commotion. Moore says the road is so narrow, she doesn't know how the crash could've been prevented.
"I don't think either one of them were at fault. Those gentlemen had nowhere to go and the officer had nowhere to go," Moore said.
We know the officer, driver and passenger in the other car were rushed to the hospital. No word yet on their injuries. We also know this was "not" part of a police chase. We'll continue to update you as details become available.
