RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond police are investigating an overnight murder in the city's East End.
It happened around 2:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of Jennie Scher Road, in the Fulton neighborhood.
A police spokesperson said when they arrived, Shamarl Whittaker, 22, was found dead inside an apartment, shot several times.
It's still very early in the investigation. Police currently are following some solid leads at this hour.
Investigators are still there looking for clues and talking to neighbors to get an idea if anyone saw or heard anything overnight.
The crime scene tape remained around this apartment building well into the morning -- a reminder for those living here in Woodcroft Village about the deadly early morning.
Many of the people we talked to here did not want to talk on camera about the murder. One woman did, but only if we didn't show her face.
"It's sad something happened in the community like that. Makes you feel threatened to be about here where you live at," says one neighbor.
"It's real scary when you have younger kids and they want to come outside to play but you can't trust having them out here," adds the unidentified neighbor.
She's not the only one saying that here. Many in this community are looking for more security, agreeing that it starts with the community itself.
"We have to work together to find some solutions and have it done," says the neighbor.
Community activist Alicia Raisin agrees. "I don't want for something to happen. We need more people to come out in the community and talk to these young people about thinking before you act."
