PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) – Fire crews were on the scene Saturday in Petersburg after a fire at the former Brown and Williamson Tobacco Factory.
At least 60 firefighters from seven departments were called to the blaze around 3:30 Saturday morning.
The building, located on Brown and Wythe streets, partially collapsed.
No injuries were reported, however one firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for overexertion.
While the cause of the fire has not yet been released firefighters believe it started on the third floor.
The old factory was being converted into loft apartments and firefighters say it should have been vacant.
A contractor is expected to arrive sometime Saturday afternoon to begin tearing down part of the damaged building.
